Cameron grew up in San Diego and moved up to Santa Cruz to attend the UC Santa Cruz where he studied Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and STEM Education. Following college, Cameron worked as a river guide and outdoor educator on the South Fork of the American River. Cameron also worked for UC’s California Ecology and Conservation field course, where students travel around to different natural reserves around California conducting research and studying ecosystems. Cameron returned to UC Santa Cruz to get his Masters in Education and taught middle and high school science in Santa Cruz City Schools for two years after that. Most recently, I’ve been teaching middle school science and skateboarding in Penn Valley.
Cameron hopes all students at SAEL learn to treat each other with compassion while finding academic areas of study that drive and excite them. Cameron wants his students to know that he cares about them as individuals. As a student, Cameron’s two favorite high school courses were chemistry and art history because they challenged him in new ways, and my teachers were passionate, caring human beings with high expectations. Cameron looks forward to bringing the same qualities to his classroom at SAEL.
Outside the classroom, Cameron loves to spend time in nature and observing the world. Ecology and evolution are the branches of science most intriguing to Cameron and he likes to travel around California in search of diverse ecosystems and environments to observe the resident birds, amphibians, and mammals. Other interests include rock climbing, skateboarding, skiing, biking, swimming, whitewater boating, reading, practicing Spanish, listening to music, and playing the piano. Cameron believes he learns best about the world by doing, and he tired to pack his time with as many different activities as possible. I am the father of a dog, Mango, and a cat, Toulouse, and protector of five chickens - Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, and Gandalf.
